After the 3rd-Annual Indian Market 5K, Join Wings, SWAIA, & The National Museum of American Indian at the New Mexico History Museum for a FREE screening of Henry Lu’s award-winning documentary “Run to the East” (US, 2011, 87min). Presented on 8/19 as part of SWAIA’s Native Cinema Showcase, the film chronicles the everyday life of three American Indian high school seniors and Wings of America alumni. Chantel “Tails” Hunt (Navajo), Thomas Martinez (Navajo), and Dillon Shije (Zia Pueblo) have overcome every obstacle in their personal lives and in their communities to become elite cross-country runners, and all three are determined to succeed. During their final year of secondary school, they compete against runners from more privileged schools as they vie for college scholarships and a chance to explore opportunities off the rez.

Director, Henry Lu is a filmmaker with Moxie Pictures in New York. His short films set in Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, and Tokyo have played at film festivals, including Sundance, Mill Valley, Sydney, and the Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto. Run to the East is Lu’s first feature-length film.

In person: Dustin Martin (Navajo), Director, Wings of America, Chantel “Tails” Hunt
